L&T Consortium bags India’s first Monorail System from Mumbai Metropolitan
Larsen & Toubro, India’s leading Technology, Engineering & Construction Company along with its Malaysian partner Scomi Engineering Bhd has secured an order worth Rs 2460 crore from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to implement the country’s first Monorail System in Mumbai.
The consortium bagged the said contract by beating Reliance-Hitachi Consortium’s bid.
Scomi Engineering is one of the world’s top three monorail manufacturers, and offers urban transportation solutions by providing the latest monorail electro-mechanical systems and rolling stock.
Under the project, L&T will hold 55 per cent stake, while the balance 45 per stake would be hold by Scomi Engineering.
The project involves Designing, Constructing, Installation, Testing & Commissioning and Integrated Testing including Train Trail with initial Operation & Maintenance from Gadge Maharaj Chowk (Jacob Circle) to Wadala (approx. 11 km) and Wadala to Chembur via Mahul (approx. 9 km) corridor on a Lump Sum Turnkey (LSTK) basis.
The line will serve 18 stations with a central depot facility for operational control and train maintenance. The project is scheduled to be completed in duration of 30 months.
The Straddle type Monorail System, which complies with the highest international standards of safety and reliability, is a modern urban transport system where the cars move on a single beam in an elevated corridor.
According to sources, the Mumbai monorail project is likely to be followed by similar transportation systems in coming months in other parts of country especially in metropolitan cities like New Delhi, Bangalore etc.
