Loew set to try newcomers against England

England match more than a test for Germany's LoewBerlin - Germany are expected to hand out some new caps in the friendly international against England in Berlin on Wednesday.

Coach Joachim Loew, who has called up three newcomers for the match in the Olympic Stadium, said Monday he wanted to test some or all of his trio of novices.

"The intention is to learn something new against strong opponents but I can't say yet exactly how it's going to look," Loew said.

"However I do want to give the one or other player a chance."

Loew has called up Hoffenheim defender Marvin Compper and midfielder Tobias Weis plus defender Marcel Schaefer of Wolfsburg as uncapped players in his squad.

Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese, who has been a member of recent squads, is also hoping to appear at some stage for a first cap.

Schaefer is thought to have the best chance of starting as Bayern Munich left-back Philipp Lahm is unavailable after only just returning from injury.

Loew said he was looking forward to the last game of the year against an England side that had improved under Fabio Capello.

"To play against England in such a large stadium is always something special," he said.

"England have undergone a transformation and taken a giant step forward."

Although England will be without several first-choice players "they have a team which has not been as strong for a long time," he said.

"Since failing to qualify for the European Championships they have won all their games. That speaks for itself. We will see a strong team in Berlin." (dpa)
