Karzai must be leader of "all Afghans," German foreign minister says
Paris - France and Germany Monday called on re-elected Afghan President Hamid Karzai to act decisively for more security and less corruption in his country.
Karzai must be "the president of all Afghans," Germany's new foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, said in Paris after a meeting with his French counterpart, Bernard Kouchner.
"We are fully on the side of the Afghan people," said Westerwelle, who was making his first official trip to Paris as foreign minister.
For his part, Kouchner said the new administration in Kabul must find acceptance on all sides.
"We have not won anything if we have not won the majority of the hearts of the Afghan people," he said.
Both men said they wanted to work more closely together in the future.
"We want to phone each other every week to discuss current issues, and even those beyond Europe," Westerwelle said.(dpa)
