It’s Not Ok for Pregnant Women to Drink Alcohol: Study
A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics has suggested that it is not at all god for pregnant women to drink alcohol. The experts said that beer, wine and liquor also pose a similar risk to the fetus as alcohol does.
Several previously conducted studies have shown that most women strictly cut on their alcohol intake when expecting, but it was found a small percentage of expecting mothers continue to consume alcohol. Some of the mother-to-be even admitted they binge drink, the report said.
According to the report from the nation’s largest group of pediatricians published in the journal Pediatrics women who binge drink when they are not pregnant may be more likely to consume alcohol during pregnancy.
The team decided to release their report, titled ‘Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders’, after some recently conducted studies has been suggesting that lower levels of alcohol might be safe during pregnancy.
The pediatricians' group strongly disagrees with the studies supporting alcohol drinking during pregnancy and say there are more evidence pointing towards dangers of drinking alcohol during pregnancy.
Lead author Dr. Janet F. Williams, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, said, “Prenatal exposure to alcohol is the leading preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities”.
According to the group, mother who consumes alcohol put the fetus at the risk of developing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. It is a condition that can cause physical, behavioral and learning problems in a child.
