Irish fishermen set protest over fuel costs, low prices
Dublin - Fishermen in Ireland were set Thursday to stage a demonstration outside the country's parliament to protest against high fuel costs and low prices for their products.
The protest was set for noon local time (1100 GMT), with fishermen also planning to tie up their boats around the country, the Irish television broadcaster RTE reported.
The protest demonstration was called by the Federation of Irish Fishermen, with fishermen concerned both about rising fuel costs and the low price they get on the market for their catch.
Ireland's fishermen say they have been struggling for years with the lowest catch permitted under European Union rules.
The protest in Dublin follows on a demonstration by fishermen in Brussels on Wednesday, when hundreds of angry fishermen, mostly from France and Italy, hurled stones at the police and fired flares at EU buildings in a protest against rising petrol prices. (dpa)
