India may take US to court for hiking visa fees

Rahul KhullarAngered by the US move to increase professional fee on Visa, it is now expected that India may take US to the World Trade Organization.

India said that it is unhappy with the protectionist approach taken by US. The impact of this will be directly felt by the Indian IT companies mainly the outsourcing ones, which fight on their low-cost model. These companies are estimated to face a total burden of $200 million because of the hike.

Talking to media, Commerce Secretary, Rahul Khullar said that India cannot just "keep quiet" and such a move is hurting its commercial interests. He also said that the WTO issue will be taken up seriously.

Meanwhile, in a writing to the US Trade Representative Ron Kirk, Indian Commerce Minister Anand Sharma has told about the high cost that Indian companies will be facing and this will make the market less competitive.

He even added that the brunt of this will be faced by the US companies as well.

The US has hiked fees in categories of H-1B and L1 visas by at least $2,000 and will be applicable for the next five years.
