Hyundai Veloster under investigation due to exploding sunroofs
The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently initiated a preliminary investigation into the exploding sunroofs of the Hyundai Veloster.
The NHTSA investigation into Hyundai Veloster's glass sunroofs is a result of the fact that as many as 15 complaints have been received about the shattering - mostly in the form of an explosion - of the vehicle's glass panels.
Interestingly, the explosion of Hyundai Veloster's sunroofs differs from similar sunroof shattering in other vehicles in the sense that while the other cases often relate to a specific variable that causes the explosion - like freezing cold conditions or driving on rough roads with open sunroof -, no such explosion-linked variable could be pinpointed in Hyundai Veloster --- particularly since 8 of the 15 cars reporting the damage were parked at the time of the sunroof explosion!
Nonetheless, all the complaints related to the explosion of the Hyundai Veloster sunroofs did one common factor --- that is, the shattering of the sunroofs was accompanied by an unbelievably loud bang; something which is quite a typical occurrence linked to the explosion of any piece of treated automotive glass.
Apparently, the most unusual thing about the explosion of the Hyundai Veloster sunroofs was that all of the reported incidents took place on the new 2012 model-year cars; with all the affected vehicles having an odometer reading of less than 3,000 miles when the glass roof exploded!
