Hyundai reports 40 per cent surge in U.S. Ioniq EV sales for February 2024

In a resounding testament to its growing influence in the US electric vehicle (EV) market, South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Company has reported a remarkable jump of 40 per cent in sales of the Ioniq e-SUV for February 2024. Despite concerns about high-interest rates impacting new car sales, Hyundai Motor America defied expectations with a year-over-year jump of 6 per cent in vehicle sales, reaching a total of 60,341 units. Notably, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6 took center stage, accounting for roughly 5 per cent of total sales volume, along with the debut of the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi.

The increase in sales not only reflects the brand’s commitment to innovation but also signals a promising trajectory for it in the fast-expanding U.S. electric car market.

In the month of February, Hyundai sold a total of 2,898 EVs based on its cutting-edge Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This impressive figure represents a 40 per cent surge from the previous year, signaling the growing demand for the brand’s all-electric offerings. Among the noteworthy contributors were the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 EVs, in addition to the newly introduced Ioniq 5 Robotaxi, which is said to be a bold venture into autonomous mobility.

It is note-worthy here that in spite of a slight decline in sales of the Ioniq 5 (down 4 per cent year-over-year), the overall Ioniq family demonstrated a robust performance, representing 4.8 per cent of the South Korean automaker’s total volume sales in the U.S.

Sales breakdown for last month revealed that the company sold 1,993 units of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, 906 units of the Hyundai Ioniq 6, and three units of the Ioniq 5 Robotaxi.

Year-to-date sales include more than 5,000 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 vehicles. This figure marks a 41 per cent growth in sales year-over-year. This notable achievement constitutes 4.7 per cent of the company’s total volume. Comparatively, the sales data for the twelve months of 2023 revealed that the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 jointly amounted to 46,917 units, contributing to around 5.9 per cent of the total volume.

While the South Korean car brand’s official statistics don’t encompass other plug-in models, such as the Santa Fe and Tucson PHEVs, the momentum of its electrification journey is noticeable. With the aforementioned surge in Ioniq EV sales and an unwavering commitment to innovative mobility solutions, the brand seems poised for an electrifying as well as prosperous year ahead in the fast-expanding American automotive landscape.
