Hyundai recalls Santa Fe SUVs and Sonata sedans over airbag issues
South Korean electronics giant, Hyundai Motor is recalling some of its Santa Fe SUVs and Sonata sedan units due to an issue with the air bag, according to U. S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The company is recalling 228,797 Santa Fe SUVs, which were produced from April 2006 through July 7, 2008 as the front air bags in the models may not deploy in case of a crash, the safety regulator said. The company is recalling 199,118 units of Santa Fe models 2007 to 2009 in the US and 29,679 vehicles from models 2007 and 2008 in Canada.
The NHTSA said that the safety mechanism has problems detecting small people and thus the air bags in the car may not deploy in case of a crash. Hyundai has said that it will update the software at no cost to the owners of the vehicles.
The company is also recalling 24,438 Sonata sedans in the United States and Canada for the models 2012-2013. The models produced from January to June this year because the side air bag might inflate unexpectedly surprising the driver. A total of 22,513 Sonata units have been recalled in the US and 1,925 units have been recalled in Canada.
The side air bag in Sonata sedan "may inflate without deployment command and increase the risk of injury to occupants of the vehicle," NHTSA said. The unexpected inflation of the air bag can hinder the driver's ability to control the vehicle. Hyundai has said that it will replace the side air bags on the Sonata free of charge.
