Hero to launch its own motorcycle in 2013

Hero to launch its own motorcycle in 2013Hero MotoCorp, India's leading two-wheeler manufacturer, has announced that it would launch its own motorcycle sans Honda technology in 2013.

The major announcement has come as Hero MotoCorp is pressing ahead its solo journey after parting ways with Japanese auto giant Honda.

The two-wheeler will be manufactured by Hero's newly-established in-house Research & Development (R&D) facility that will work in partnership with the group's three foreign technology partners, viz. AVL, Erik Buell Racing and Engines Engineering.

Anil Dua, Senior Vice President (Marketing & Sales) at Hero MotoCorp, said, "We have technology partners like EBR, AVL and Engines Engineering. A lot of collaborations are already taking place and we will be launching the first product with our own IPR through these collaborations by 2013-14."

Dua added that Hero MotoCorp would also introduce its existing bikes in African and Latin American markets in the final quarter of current financial year. The products would be customized to make them fitting for those markets.

In the scooter segment, Hero currently holds 43 per cent share of the domestic market. After Pleasure, its second scooter called 'Maestro' is also doing well.

Hero and Honda remained partners in the Hero Honda Motors Ltd (HHML) joint venture for a total of 26 years. When the Japanese company exited from the JV in 2011, some analysts said it would be hard for Hero to roll out new products on its own as Honda was the sole technology supplier to the very-successful HHML JV.
