A healthy diet can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease

Healthy-DietA survey conducted in New York stated that healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, poultry and fish, nuts and less red meat and less butter can minimize the risk of Alzheimer's disease.

Investigators have analyzed the eating patterns of 2148 people from New York, aged 65 and above. They have been also assessed for symptoms of Alzheimer's disease as well as dementia every year and a half for 4 years continuously.

The study was published in the Archives of Neurology. To arrive at a conclusion, researchers have analyzed seven nutrients specifically saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, omega 3 fatty acids, omega 6 fatty acids, vitamins E and B12 and folate.

Several other studies revealed the relationship between risk of dementia and diet and this study is more focused on intake of seven nutrients. During the study, initially researchers found no patient with the symptoms of dementia but by the end of this study 253 people were found suffering from dementia. Investigators found that people who had intake low high-fat dairy products, red meat and organ meat, and butter are established at a lesser risk of Alzheimer's disease. Food inclusive of dark and green dark and green vegetables like cabbage, kale, cauliflower, salad dressings, tomatoes, nuts, fish and poultry were found to fight against Alzheimer's disease.

On the other hand another study conducted by temple shows that, diet rich in amino acid methionine accelerate the probability of developing Alzheimer's disease. The diet rich in amino acid methionine includes red meat, fish, beans, eggs, garlic, lentils, onions, yogurt and seeds. This research was published in the journal, Current Alzheimer Research.

It was discovered that if homocysteine levels can be reduced, it can diminish the risk of Alzheimer's disease, and Vitamin B12 and folate are homocysteine related vitamins, which can reduce the flow of homocysteine levels whereas intake of vitamin E with its antioxidant property can prevent the disease. While fatty acids can cause dementia and can affect the normal functioning of brain development, said by Yian Gu, PhD and colleagues from Columbia University.
