Half of All Marine Life wiped out in single generation, says World Wide Fund for Nature
A report by World Wide Fund for Nature revealed that humanity has failed in managing oceans around the world. Due to the mismanagement, the planet has lost about 50% of world's marine animals in a single generation, the report said.
Emergency edition of Living Blue Planet Report of WWF reported that about half of the marine vertebrate populations declined between 1970 and 2012. Figures for some fish are even worse as during the same period, about 75% of fish populations have declined, as per the report.
Richard Leck, marine program leader for WWF Australia, said, "I work on these issues day-to-day, but to see the findings of this report in the space of a generation, it is truly stunning that we can have that level of impact in such a short period of time".
Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF International, said that the new report has provided some worrisome results. The current situation is nothing less than a crisis, Lambertini added.
The new report monitored more than 5,800 animal populations of 1,234 species. There are a number of past studies that have suggested about ocean health, but the new report has given broader overview on the matter than previous researches.
The report has shown how commercial fishing and private sector has affected the marine animals. According to the report, it has been found that the population of species essential to commercial fishing was declining. Scrombidae declined more than 70% between 1970 and 2010.
