Govt To Meet Telecom Chiefs On Nov. 21

The Department of Telecommunications has called up a meeting of the chiefs of all leading telecom companies providing GSM technology services on November 21 to answer arguable issues that have bobbed up following fresh changes in telecom plan.

To this effect, a letter signed by DoT Secretary D S Mathur has been mailed to Reliance Communications Chairman Anil Ambani, Vodafone Inc CEO Arun Sarin, Maxis Communications Chairman Anand Krishnan, Bharti group's Sunil Mittal, Idea Cellular's Kumar Mangalam Birla and Spice Telecom's B K Modi.

Grave disputes have come up between GSM players and the administration on various matters, some of which are planned for hearing before the telecom board.
GSM players have challenged the government's verdict letting dual-spectrum utilization under the same licence.

A letter of intent has already been given to Reliance Communications to operate GSM services.

The GSM lobby has also interrogated the shift to considerably lift the subscriber base standard for telecom companies to meet the criteria for additional spectrum, the radio frequencies that facilitate mobile communications.

The lobby has also objected to the government plan on apportioning spectrum for third-generation (3G) services.

Recently, however, there have been some indications from the Cellular Operators' Association of India (COAI), the GSM operators' lobby, that it is open to dialogue with the government.
