Government to roll out new telecom policy by June 2012

The union telecom ministry has said that the new telecom policy will be rolled out by June next year.

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal had announced the draft NTP 2011 in October and had said that the new policy would be ready after including comments within 2011. however, the ministry has said that the policy will take until June
2012 to be rolled out.

The new telecom policy will bring roaming-free environment with one-nation, one-tariff and may also allow nationwide number portability. The ministry noted that the number of telephone connections, including wireline and wireless connections, was recorded at 914.60 million as on October 31, 2011 compared to the target of 600 million at the end of March 2012.

The draft NTP-2011 was focused at offering secure, reliable and affordable voice telephony and high-speed broadband services everyone in the country, with a special focus on rural and remote areas.

The policy also aims to make India major player among the manufacturers of electronic products. It aims to boost production of telecom equipment within India and safeguard security concerns of the country. It will also encourage domestic production of cost effective mobile devices.

The new National Telecom Policy will be announced by the government by June 2012.
