Government Contemplates Change In Content Code Of TV Programs

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) is adopting the idea of revamping the Content Code of television programs to suit the changing times. Media Experts strongly believe that there is an urgent need to revise it.

While addressing the News Television Summit 2008, Sushma Singh Secretary, Information and Broadcasting Ministry said, “We are contemplating a review of the existing draft content code as it needs to be at par with changing times.”

Singh further said that there should be an agreement between government and private broadcasters on content regulation.

An agreement between government and private broadcasters could not get approved while two drafts were proposed under the present United Progressive Alliance government.

A demand was made for a separate regulation to be drafted by various broadcasters including the new broadcasters association, the Indian Broadcasting foundation.

The guidelines covered under the proposed code content includes a standard of content to be followed by over 350 television channels which includes the general entertainment channels, news channels and radio companies.

Singh also informed that a decision regarding the much delayed Broadcast Bill has yet to be taken. The bill which has been posted on the website of the ministry is still waiting for the Parliament to pass it.
