WHO congress backs traditional medicine for national health plans Beijing - A UN-sponsored congress on Saturday urged the integration of traditional medicine into national health care plans, saying patients would benefit from its use alongside modern medicine.

"The knowledge of traditional medicine, treatments and practices should be respected, preserved, promoted and communicated widely and appropriately based on the circumstances in each country," said a joint declaration issued at the end of the World Health Organization Congress on Traditional Medicine.

China cracks down on "fake" journalists

China, BeijingBeijing - China on Saturday said it would crack down on "fake"
journalists, a category that appears to include many freelance
journalists.

The General Administration of Press and Publications issued a
circular on Friday asking journalists to register for press cards "in
order to prove their legal identities to their interviewees," the
government's official Xinhua news agency said.

The circular was designed to "protect the legal rights of news
organizations and journalists" and to "step up a crackdown on fake
journalists," the agency said.

Five killed in blast in northern Indian town

Uttar PradeshNew Delhi - Five persons were killed and at least three critically injured on Saturday in an explosion at an army waste dump in the northern Indian town of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh state, news reports said.

A group of waste collectors were sorting out rubbish when the blast occurred, PV Ramashastri, deputy inspector general of police said.

The blast may have been caused by dynamite sticks in the scrap heap, NDTV television reported quoting police sources.

Indian premier leaves on visit to Oman, Qatar

Manmohan Singh, Middle EastNew Delhi  - Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday began a three-day visit to the energy-rich Gulf nations of Oman and Qatar for talks on investment, trade and energy.

Federal Petroleum Minister Murli Deora, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi and Planning Comission chief Montek Singh Ahluwalia are accompanying Singh.

In a statement ahead of his visit, Singh said: "The Gulf region is an area of vital importance for India's security and prosperity. We have always enjoyed a very special relationship with countries of the region."

5 killed in explosion in Meerut

Uttar Pradesh, MeerutMeerut (U. P.), Nov 8 : At least five persons have been killed and two injured on Saturday in an explosion in an army waste dump in Ahmednagar area of Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.

“Some ragpickers found an army mortar shell in the scrap and were trying to extract the metal when the blast occurred,” Senior Superintendent of Police Raghuveer Lal said.

He added, “While five persons died on the spot, two were critically injured.”

Lal further said that it was an “accidental” explosion and not related to any terror activists.
