Berlin - Germany slumped into a recession for the first time in five years, official data released Thursday showed, amid signs that a global economic downturn was taking hold.

Kuwait City - Kuwait halted trading in its stock exchange on Thursday after traders demanded action to stop major losses, the country's trade minister and its state news agency said.
The halt in trading came after a court order on Thursday.
Minister of Trade and Industry Ahmad Baqer told Al-Arabiya TV that trading could resume on Sunday.
The station showed footage of traders protesting at the stock exchange.
Lusaka- Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in Zambia's north-central Copperbelt region Thursday to demand the release of a local radio journalist who was arrested Wednesday for alleged incitement in a post-election programme.
The protesters, who chanted anti-government slogans, brought business in the town of Kitwe to a standstill, privately-owned Radio Phoenix reported.
No injuries were reported in the demonstration that passed off with only minor rioting.

While condemning militancy, the participants in the rally appealed to the government to take tough measures against such elements and restore peace in the state.
