Thailand's by-election gives coalition government a boost Bangkok  - Thailand's current government received a boost from a by-election held over the weekend that has added 20 seats to a Democrat-led coalition compared with nine for the opposition, unofficial results showed Monday.

Coalition partners have won 20 of the 29 contested seats, leaving the two opposition parties - Puea Thai and Pracharaj with nine, according to the Election Commission's unofficial tally Monday.

Thais on Sunday voted in a by-election in 22 provinces and for a new governor in Bangkok.

ANZ Bank reviews Satyam linksMelbourne, Jan. 12 : In the wake of Hyderabad-based Satyam Computer Services'' billion dollar corporate scandal, the management of ANZ Bank has announced that it will reviewing its links with the firm.

ANZ Bank has around 100 Satyam contractors who support IT projects. The bank''s Indian subsidiary which employs under 2000 people, primarily uses these contractors.

Last week, the bank told its employees that it would develop a contingency plan, while admitting that its relationship with Satyam was "modest".

South Korea, Japan pledge closer ties

Seoul  - South Korean President Lee Myung Bak and Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso Monday vowed to increase their efforts to stop North Korea's nuclear weapons programme, in close cooperation with the administration of incoming US president Barack Obama.

The two leaders, who met for a bilateral summit in the South Korean capital Seoul, also pledged to work together to overcome the effects of the global recession on Asian exports.

Lee told journalists that he hoped close bilateral cooperation as well as working with the international community would be a major contribution to the recovery of the global economy.

Shibu Soren likely to resign todayRanchi, Jan. 12 : Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren, who had lost the assembly by-elections, is likely to resign today, paving the way for Champai Soren, another stalwart of the regional Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

Soren yesterday told reporters: "The JMM had met thrice and chose Champai Soren as its representative. We have sent this information to other members of our coalition in New Delhi and waiting for response. I am ready to resign."

On Champai selection, RJD chief Lalu Yadav said the UPA will take a final decision.
