Aamir Khan’s directorial debut TZP, which was India’s official entry to Oscar, did not figure among the nine films (short listed in the foreign language film category) competing for the 81st Academy Awards.

Bangladeshi envoy in Malaysia to face trial for Mujib''s murder

Kuala Lumpur, Jan. 15 : Bangladesh''s High Commissioner to Malaysia M. Khairuzzaman has been ordered to return home to face charges over the 1975 assassination of the country''s founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The New Strait Times quoted Bangladesh's Junior Minister for Foreign Affairs Hasan Mahmud as saying that: "A faxed copy is being sent to Khairuzzaman as we speak."

The trial, Hasan told the New Straits Times, would start "very soon". He said Foreign Minister Dipu Moni signed the recall order.

When contacted, Khairuzzaman, 57, declared the case as "political victimisation".

"I''m very anxious, these are baseless allegations," he said.

Troops push deep into Gaza City - 1.5 km from centre

Gaza City - Israeli ground troops pushed deep into southern Gaza City Thursday, advancing as far as 1.5 kilometres from the city centre amid heavy tank shelling, residents said.

The ground forces were "very close" to the city's Islamic University and its United Nations headquarters, a local Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa correspondent said, adding that he was sheltering with his family inside a home in the central Rimal neighbourhood with the troops fighting nearby.

Backed by tanks firing large numbers of shells, the Israeli troops, concentrating in the southern Tel el-Hawa neighbourhood just south of Rimal, fought heavy battles with local militants.

London, Jan. 15 : The British Government has announced that migrants coming to Britain will have to pay an"immigration tax" to help communities cope.

According to The Telegraph, the tax could be as little as 20 pounds, as part of plans to make newcomers earn their stay.

The paper says that the levy will be put on visa fees for foreigners as a contribution towards the schools, hospitals and other services they use but critics warn it will make little difference.

Tens of thousands of migrants who want to be British citizens each year will also be "fast tracked" to settlement if they carry out voluntary or community work, under the Borders, Immigration and Citizenship Bill.

Report: Last Ethiopian forces leave Somali capital

Nairobi/Mogadishu - The last of the Ethiopian troops that have been propping up Somalia's transitional federal government for the last two years have left the Somali capital Mogadishu, reports said Thursday.

Witnesses and officials said that the Ethiopians emptied out all of their bases and quit the capital overnight.

"I can confirm there are not any Ethiopian soldiers in the capital Mogadishu," Abdifitah Ibrahim Sabriye, deputy governor of Banadir Region, told Radio Shabelle.

Ethiopian forces invaded in late 2006 to help kick out the Islamic Courts Union (ICU), a hardline Islamist regime that was in power for six months.
