Twin suicide bombings, roadside blast kill one Afghan, wound nine

Afghanistan MapKabul - One Afghan civilian was killed and nine others, including police officers, were wounded in two suicide attacks and a roadside bomb blast in a town in south-eastern Afghanistan, officials said Monday.

A suicide bomber driving a explosive-filled vehicle attacked a NATO-led US military base in Khost city, the capital for the province of the same name, on Sunday, but caused no casualties among the troops, a NATO spokesman in Kabul said.

The Afghan interior ministry said that the blast killed one Afghan civilian and wounded six others.

Dutch Obama fans preparing for inauguration

The biggest party, organized by the Dutch Obama Fanclub founded several months ago, was due to take place in The Hague.

Hundreds of Obama fans will be watching the inauguration ceremony live on seven huge video screens in restaurant Raar in Scheveningen, near The Hague.

Among the guests is Henk Jan Ormel, chairman of the foreign affairs committee in the Dutch parliament.

Austrian peacekeepers to extend Chad mission

Austrian peacekeepers to extend Chad mission Vienna - Austria is set to extend the humanitarian mission of its troops in Chad until the end of 2009, the foreign ministry said Monday.

Austrian troops are currently deployed as part of the European Union's peacekeeping operation which helps refugees and maintains security in the region.

In mid-March, when the mandate of the current 3,300 EU peacekeepers expires, a United Nations peacekeeping operation is set to take its place, the UN Security Council decided last week.

Poles gain confidence in Euro 2012 prep work

Euro 2012 LogoWarsaw - Once doubtful and pessimistic, a majority of Poles now believe preparations will be completed in time to co-host the Euro 2012 football tournament with Ukraine.

Seventy-eight per cent now believe their cities will make it before deadline, said a survey of 3,000 people in the daily Rzeczpospolita on Monday.

The survey marks a swing in mood before the football championship. In June, some three-quarters were afraid the country might not be ready or didn't have enough time, according to a poll from the Public Opinion Research Center.

Renan out for month, Valencia looking for another goalkeeper

Valencia LogoMadrid - Spanish football giants Valencia announced on Monday that goalkeeper Renan would be out of action for around a month.

The 23 year-old Brazilian tore a muscle in his left thigh in Sunday's 3-2 defeat away to Athletic Bilbao, and will not be back in action until late February.

Therefore, Valencia are looking for another goalkeeper in the January transfer window. The fourth-placed club does not appear to have much confidence in 22-year-old reserve Vicente Guaita, who came on for Renan in Bilbao and looked shaky.

Saudi King urges Israel to act on Arab peace plan

Saudi Arabia MapRiyadh - Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah, speaking at an Arab economic summit in Kuwait Monday, urged Israel to accept a six-year-old, comprehensive Arab-Israeli peace plan, saying it "will not remain on the table forever."

The plan promises normalisation of Arab relations with Israel in exchange for Israeli withdrawal from territories it has occupied since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war, the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, and a "just settlement" of the Palestinian refugee question.
