French firm organises camp for Haryana farmers

ambalaAmbala, Oct 29 French retailer Carrefour Thursday organised a farmer empowerment camp in Mithapur village in this Haryana district with an objective to train them for improving the yield and quality of their produce.

Nearly 150 farmers attended the camp that included various sessions on irrigation, climatic conditions, manure, fertilisers and marketing of products, Carrefour officials said.

"Our scientists have imparted technical resource support on four crops, including wheat, gram, mustard and tomato, during the camp," said Yannick Douville, director (fresh department) of Carrefour India.

"These camps are part of our community development programme, wherein we aim to accelerate the growth of Indian agriculture," Douville added.

In India, Carrefour presently works with nearly 90 suppliers and farmers from Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Punjab and Haryana and exports goods worth the $170 million from the country.

"We have conducted six such camps in the last one year in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, which had benefited more than 1,000 farmers by an overall increase in their crop yield by 10 percent," Douville said. (IANS)
