Franz Hals and Turner dominate Old Master sale in London

London - A rediscovered portrait by Dutch Golden Age painter Franz Hals (1580-1666) and a Turner view of the London home of English poet Alexander Pope were among highlights at a sale of Old Masters at Sotheby's in London which realized 51.4 million pounds (101.5 million dollars), the auction house said Thursday.

Franz Hals' portrait of merchant Willem van Heythusen was sold for 7 million pounds, against an estimate of between 3 and 5 million pounds at Wednesday evening's sale, Sotheby's said.

An oil painting by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) of the home of Pope on the Thames in Twickenham, south-west London, commanded the second-highest price of the sale, fetching 5.4 million pounds.

Most of the altogether 19 paintings sold in the Old Master auction came from the renowned collection of German physician and art lover Gustav Rau and the Dutch Wetzlar collection. (dpa)
