Four injured in organized crime attack on Mexican town

MexicoMexico City  - Armed groups carried out two simultaneous attacks Monday and injured four police officers in the Mexican town of Uruapan, in the northwestern state of Michoacan.

Michoacan authorities said hundreds of bullet holes were found in the home of Uruapan police boss Adolfo Medina Olivos, which was attacked with very powerful weapons. Two of the police officers guarding the site were injured, although their wounds were not life threatening.

Two other local police officers were injured in an attack on the Uruapan police headquarters.

The attacks were reportedly carried out by men travelling in at least three vehicles, who hurled grenades against the police headquarters and shot at the police chief's home.

Organized crime activity, most of which is related to drug gangs, claimed close to 6,300 lives in Mexico in 2008. dpa
