Foreign Campuses allowed for IIMs

kapil-sibal-IIMsToday, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has declared that they have changed the policy.

Once they have sorted out the problem of faculty, the premier Management Institutes, like IIMs and IITs can open campus in India and Abroad. Earlier, there was a case when IIM Bangalore wanted to open a centre at Singapore and the ministry had denied the permission on the grounds that the IIM, Bangalore’s Memorandum of Association did not authorize the institute to open centre abroad.

After a meeting with HRD Minister, Mr. Kapil Sibal, IIM Directors were optimistic. One IIM Director said that many times in past, they had thought of opening centre abroad but presently there is no proposal before the Ministry.

But now, that the permission is given, they are interested in opening centers in African and Asian countries, who have expressed the interest.

However, the flip side of this proposal is that there is already a severe shortage of faculty in most of the IIMs. At IIM Ahmadabad, the ratio of faculty-student is 1.11, at IIM Bangalore, the ratio is 1:13.4 and IIM Kozhikode the ratio is 1:15, although the accepted ratio is 1:9.
