Footage by National Geographic Shows Vultures Eating Carcass
Researchers have conducted a new study on rapidly decreasing population of vultures in several parts of the world. Vultures, the creatures which are often seen in animated films and comic scenes, are now on the verge of extinction. To raise awareness on the plight of the bird, the researchers have shared a video that shows vultures tearing a carcass.
The researchers in the Serengeti placed a Go-Pro inside a wildebeest carcass. The video has been titled as ‘POV: If Vultures Ate You, Here’s What You’d See’. Darcy Ogada, researcher with Africa Programs for the Peregrine Fund, has said that some of the several species of vulture in Africa may face extinction in 50 to 100 years.
“The impact of their declines is huge. They’re providing such a huge service to such a huge population”, said Ogada.
The study reported 95% drop in the population of vultures across the globe. The researchers considered humans to be responsible for threatening the lives of these beautiful creatures. They said that humans are using these scavengers for their trade purposes by hunting them for their beautiful eyes, feathers and bones. Another reason for their decline is considered to be habitat loss and poisoning.
It is said that decline in vulture population could also be a big problem for the local population, as the birds have a great digestive system that is capable of preventing disease spread. And, they can also kill bacteria related to gangrene and tetanus.
