Food price to be given to scientists behind GM crops
The World Food Prize that is also known as the "Nobel Prize for food and agriculture" for this year has been awarded to three scientists, who played a key role in the development of genetically engineered crops: Marc Van Montagu, Mary-Dell Chilton and Robert Fraley.
The World Food Prize has not received much attention in the previous years and has been mostly given to scientist and agriculturalists. The as the genetically engineered crops remains a controversial topic in the several countries, the honour will attract some attention in the firm of anger and protest.
The three winners were announced Wednesday at the U. S. State Department in the presence of Secretary of State John Kerry. The award event reunites the three scientists as thirty years ago, each of the three winners had separately presented results of experiments relating to inserting genes into plants for the creation of GM crops.
The World Food Prize Foundationis a private and non-profit organization and has its headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. Major funding for the prize was provided by John Ruan, a prominent Des Moines businessman and the award was sponsored by General Foods.
