Few respond to protest called by ‘Anonymous’
The protest called by internet activists ‘Anonymous’ against the 'growing censorship of internet by the government' in India received a low response from the internet users.
The protests were held on June 9 but failed to attract a large number of people or have any significant impact. Supports of the activist group and the cause gathered at venues in 16 cities across the country but the number of participants remained low as only about 50 people gathered in Delhi wearing 'Guy Fawkes' masks. Protests were also held in Delhi, Mumbai, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Pune, Chandigarh and other cities.
‘Anonymous’ has asked the government of India not to practice internet censorship. “ It has come to our attention that you have blocked file sharing websites in India. We also know you are in the process of making a Great Indian Firewall, to censor the internet in India”, the group said in an open letter.
It also said that the group believes that the steps in this direction are incorrect. The letter also warned that the government’s decision to begin internet censorship not only shows that it is away from the political and technological realities but it a declaration of war against the group.
The group has already attacked several website in the country including websites of CERT-In and government of India.
