FedEx, BP Solar installing US’ largest rooftop solar array!

FedEx, BP Solar installing US’ largest rooftop solar array!According to a recent press release, US' largest rooftop solar power array is being worked on by FedEx Ground! The solar power installation, work on which will commence next month, will be set up by BP Solar. The installation will likely be completed by November.

The mammoth 2.4 megawatt solar array will be installed atop FedEx Ground's Woodbridge, New Jersey, distribution facility, and will cater to almost 30 percent of the hub's yearly energy requirements.

The expansive solar array - FedEx's fifth solar project, the third involving BP Solar - features 12,400 solar panels, spread over nearly 3.3 acres of rooftop space. As per the FedEx-BP deal, BP will install as well as operate the system, while FedEx will purchase the power generated.

Going by a FedEx statement, once the mentioned solar power array becomes fully operational, it will bring about almost 1,867 metric tons per year reduction per in CO2 emissions.

Last year, FedEx installed two solar power projects in California - the 282-kilowatt system in Whittier; and the 269-kilowatt system in Fontana. The 2007-installed 904-kilowatt system that FedEx installed in its Oakland, California, hub meets almost 80 percent of its peak energy demand.

On the international front, FedEx is working on Germany's Central and Eastern European gateway at the Cologne, Bonn, airport - the hub, with a 1.4-megawatt solar power system, would be completed in 2010!
