Peshawar, May 30 : The law and order situation in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) was poor and alarming and it could spread to the entire country if not addressed, chairman of a Senate Committee has said.

Chairing a meeting of the Senate’s Standing Committee on States and Frontier Regions (SAFRON), Senator Abdul Rashid Ahmad underlined the need to empower local elders and Maliks to streamline the feeble administrative system in the Tribal Areas.

SAFRON Federal Minister Najmuddin Khan, FATA senators, members of the National Assembly (MNAs), political agents and FATA Secretariat officials attended the meeting, reported the Daily Times.

The Senate Committee formed a special committee consisting of tribal elders, FATA parliamentarians, SAFRON representatives and FATA Secretariat officials to propose amendments to the Frontier Crimes Regulation (FCR) and suggest measures to improve the law and order situation in Tribal Areas.

The FATA Additional Chief Secretary gave a detailed presentation on the law and order situation in FATA, its causes, losses and future strategy formulated by the government to control it.

The Special Committee will meet on June 4, a day before the meeting of the Cabinet Committee, to prepare recommendations. (ANI)
