Facebook urges users to report phishing ads
Social networking giant, Facebook is urging its users to help root out the menace of phishing ads on the world's largest social network by reporting them to the company.
Facebook has launched a new e-mail address, phish@fb.com, allowing users to report annoying phishing ads on the site. These phishing ads ask users to click on them and lead them to their websites and this allows them to spread the ads to more users.
Facebook wrote in a blog post today that, "By providing Facebook with reports, we can investigate and request for browser blacklisting and site takedowns where appropriate. We will then work with our eCrime team to ensure we hold bad actors accountable. Additionally, in some cases, we'll be able to identify victims, and secure their accounts."
Facebook classifies phishing as any attempt to steal personal information including username, password, or financial information through impersonation or spoofing. Phishing ads have been spoofing people through emails and on social networking sites to acquire information for marketers, for stealing money or imply to spread illegal programmes.
Facebook will ask affected users to change their passwords and also guide them to take steps to protect themselves in the future.
