Elon Musk: Tesla working on crossover SUV and Roadster replacement

Elon Musk: Tesla working on crossover SUV and Roadster replacementTesla founder Elon Musk has recently hinted, during a conversation with Wired, that the automaker's fourth and fifth cars will apparently include a crossover SUV and a Roadster replacement; but those interested in getting behind the wheel of these vehicles will probably have to wait till their planned 2016 launch.

According to the details shared by Musk with Wired, the first vehicle on the agenda of the electric car company is the 2015 model of a $30,000-priced sedan which, Tesla is hopeful, will widen its audience significantly.

Further disclosing that Tesla is also currently developing subsequent models, Musk said that the crossover SUV and a Roadster replacement - both are still to get an official name - are an integral part of the company's plans, especially in terms of reaping profits from the investments that it has made in underlying vehicle architecture.

Musk told Wired that the SUV crossover which Tesla is working on will essentially compete with the X3 - the premium compact SUV from BMW - in the fiercely cut-throat and profitable segment, comprising vehicles with off-road looks but superlative on-road performance.

So far as the planned Roadster replacement is concerned, Musk said that the vehicle will be developed with `excellent driving experience' as the key focus, and will apparently boast "supercar performance, but not supercar pricing."
