Spyker Cars, Netherlands based luxury carmakers which manufacturer’s up-to 50 units a year, mostly targeted to the US market, has recently announced its plans to move its assembly plant to Coventry. The company's cars boast a starting price of nearly ?180,000.

As confirmed by the company, 45 out of the currently occupied 135 jobs would be at a risk of getting axed when it moves the assembly plant from Zeewolde to Whitley, in Coventry, a move which is expected to happen by the end of the year. With the new step, Spyker is looking to reduce operating costs, as the new assembly plant would be much closer to CPP Manufacturing, which supplies the carmaker with main parts.

"We realize that jobs will be affected in the Netherlands but we believe this move is necessary under the current economic circumstances and is in the best interest of the company and all of its stakeholders", said Spyker. The headquarters of the company, it has been confirmed, will remain in Holland.

The news has been well received in UK, with Paul Everitt, Chief executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, asserting that "investment in UK automotive facilities is good news for the industry".
