Commerce students want a break

Unhappy over lack of a holiday before a key subject — bookkeeping and accountancy

Commerce students attempting HSC exams this year have a grouse against the timetable. According to them, the board has failed to allot a holiday for one of their key subjects — bookkeeping and accountancy.

“Bookkeeping and accounts is one of the important subjects for commerce students. As I have opted for secretarial practice (SP), I have three important papers one after the other and there is no break for the accountancy exam,” complained Anahita Nair, a commerce student of Sathaye College, Vile Parle.

Students are further incensed that science students are getting a two-day break before their mathematics exam while they have to prepare in a hurry. “It is true that bookkeeping needs more time for students to prepare. However, since the last two years, we have noticed that there has been no holiday before the exam,” said Anish Thakkar, director, commerce, Mahesh Tutorials.

Some tuition classes have taken steps to prepare students for such situations. “We had a mock exam with the same timetable for the students. We did not give them a break for book keeping. So I think our students are well prepared for the exam,” said Shrenik Kotecha, director of business development, Mahesh Tutorials.

According to Kiran Mangaonkar, principal of Mithibai College, it is not mandatory for the board to allot holidays for key exams. “Students should have prepared for the exam throughout the year. The board is not obliged to allot holidays for this,” he said.
