Climate change to result in high prices of food, Oxfam

Climate change to result in high prices of food, OxfamGlobal welfare organization, Oxfam has said that climate change will result in the rose of wheat, maize and many other food items in the international markets.

Oxfam said in a new report that the impact if climate change on food prices have been underestimated. It warns that the drastic rise in food prices will be devastating for the poorest people in the world, who spend as much as 75 per cent of their income on food.

In the new report titled, `Extreme Weather, Extreme Price', the development charity says that calamities such as droughts and floods, which are made more likely by global warming, will drive up prices of foos items around the world. The research that was comissioned by the charity and undertaken by the Institute of Development Studies studied the possible impact of climate change on food prices in 2030.

"For vulnerable people, sudden and extreme price hikes can be more devastating than gradual long-term rises to which they may have more chance of adjusting. Though the price spike and coping strategies may be short-term, the impacts are often felt across generations. An increase in malnutrition can cause stunting and reduce developmental potential in young children," Oxfam said in a report.
