Chidambaram admits to security lapses

Chidambaram admits to security lapsesOn Friday, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, confessed that there were 'lapses' in the security mechanism. However, a promise was made by him that the Central and State agencies would make an earnest effort to eliminate terrorism.

At a press conference, he told the reporters, "I am deeply sorry for what has happened [the terror attacks in Mumbai]. Undoubtedly, there have been some lapses. These are being looked into. I will do my utmost best and strain every nerve to overcome lapses and improve the effectiveness of the security system in the country."

The Minister also insisted that there was a need for a combined effort from the governments and the people to curb terrorism. The latest episode was termed as a challenge to the soul of India by him. "There is ample evidence to show that the source of terror attacks was clearly linked to organizations, which have in the past been identified in connection with terror attacks. One or two countries have confirmed our preliminary investigations," said Mr. Chidambaram when asked about the role of Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence in the attacks, who other wise avoided to name any organization.

The courageous officers who died fighting the attackers were saluted by the Minister, who also paid homage to the dead.
