Capsule Technologie becomes part of Qualcomm Life

On Monday, Qualcomm made an announcement that it has acquired Capsule Technologie, a maker of medical data collection technology, in a bid to expand the San Diego Company’s footprint in the medical Internet of Things market. The company didn’t disclose purchase price.

Based in France, Capsule has over 1,930 hospital customers in 38 countries and is going to become part of Qualcomm Life. Qualcomm Life is a division which offers the 2net wireless connectivity platform to medical device makers.

A hub device is part of Qualcomm’s 2net to provide wireless connectivity in homes and a secure network backbone for the transmission of the patient data to doctors and other care givers.

Most of the times, Qualcomm Life’s platform has been used for remote monitoring outside of hospitals. Capsule has a huge customer base of hospitals, wherein its technology helps in the collecting, distributing, and managing data from medical devices inside the hospital walls.

In a statement, President Derek Aberle said Qualcomm is dedicated to strengthening its position in specific Internet of Everything verticals, like health care. Derek mentioned, “The acquisition of Capsule expands the breadth of our health care platform, enabling us to provide connectivity solutions for the entire care continuum and create one of the world’s largest connected health ecosystems”.

Capsule Chief Executive Gene Cattarina, in a blog post, said the companies together will be able to provide a regulator-approved platform for the supply of health data no matter where the patient is.
