Canada Bans BPA In Baby BottlesCanadian government is formally declaring ‘Bisphenol A’ as a toxic substance and bans its use in the manufacture of baby bottles.

"Today's confirmation of our ban on BPA in baby bottles proves that our government did the right thing in taking action to protect the health and environment for all Canadians," said Environment Minister John Baird in a statement Friday.

The announcement to ban the chemical comes six months after Canada's health ministry declared BPA as dangerous. A research has found that bisphenol A has is dangerous to humans especially newborns and infants, and the environment.

BPA is used in making the lining of food cans, eyeglass lenses and hundreds of household items. It is mainly used to manufacture a clear plastic polycarbonate that can withstand high temperatures.

The European Union and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have not yet declared the chemical to be toxic.

Major retailers in Canada including Wal-Mart have begun removing BPA-based food-related products such as baby bottles and sipping cups from store shelves.
