BYD’s Yuan Up compact crossover launched with starting price of just $13,400

BYD Limited, a publicly listed Chinese multinational vehicle manufacturing company headquartered in the Shenzhen expanse of Guangdong province, recently unveiled the latest addition to its electric vehicle (EV) lineup – the Yuan Up. The Yuan UP is an electric compact crossover, which comes with a really alluring starting price of $13,400 (approximately 96,800 CNY). Its highly competitive price point suggests that it aims to revolutionize entry-level electric mobility. Targeting young consumers, this new battery-powered vehicle also aims to reshape sales dynamics.

Based on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 and powered by the leading-edge Blade Battery technology, the Yuan Up compact crossover epitomizes affordability without making any compromise on performance. Its compact dimensions (length of 4,310 mm, width of 1,830 mm, height of 1,675 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,620 mm) make it an ideal urban companion, offering agility as well as versatility.

Available in three trim levels, the entry-level variant of the new vehicle boasts a 32-kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery pack, delivering up to 187 miles (roughly 301 km) of CLTC range, which is an impressive feat at this price point. With a peak power output of 70 kW and peak torque of 180 Nm, the Yuan Up accelerates from 0 to 62 mph (approx. 100 km/h) in just around 12 seconds, making city commutes a breeze.

For those seeking heightened performance, the higher trim levels offer bigger 45.12 kWh batteries, providing a laudable CLTC range of 249 miles (approx. 401 km) on a single charge. With a more powerful electric motor producing 130 kW and 290 Nm of peak torque, acceleration from 0 to 62 mph (approx. 100 km/h) is achieved in merely 7.9 seconds – perfect for spirited driving aficionados.

The strategic pricing of the vehicle, coupled with incentives like a $277 (equivalent to 2,000 CNY) trade-in subsidy and 0 per cent interest loans over a 24-month period, aims to attract a broader customer base, further strengthening the company's sales volume. This move underscores the automaker’s commitment to democratizing electric mobility and nurturing widespread adoption of eco-friendly transportation solutions.

As the Chinese EV market continues to expand, fueled by fierce competition and the introduction of affordable models like the Yuan Up, BYD stands poised to solidify its position as a global leader in electric vehicle adoption, potentially reshaping the global landscape of electric mobility in the years to come.
