Bus rams passengers at Delhi airport, killing one tourist
New Delhi - A Ukrainian tourist was killed and three other people were injured when a bus hit them at the international airport in New Delhi, police said Monday.
The accident occurred at the departure terminal in the early hours of Sunday when the passengers were taking out their luggage from a coach on which they had reached the airport.
"Another bus carrying some airline crew hit the group of passengers. A 56-year-old Ukrainian man, Mykhailo Berschadsky died on the spot while three others were injured," Delhi Police inspector Subhash Kumar said.
The injured passengers were admitted to a hospital near the airport where they were being treated.
Police arrested the driver of the bus who claimed the brakes of the vehicle failed resulting in the accident.
"But there are different versions, some witnesses said the driver was negligent and was talking on his mobile phone. We are investigating the matter," Kumar said.
It was the second death within a week at the Delhi airport, which is being revamped to double its capacity to handle 37 million passengers a year by 2010.
On May 25, a ground crew member was killed after being hit by an ambulance. In March, a worker was crushed by a bulldozer during work at the airport. (dpa)
