Borges named new Fluminense coach

Borges named new Fluminense coachRio de Janeiro, April 3 - Brazilian giants Fluminense have announced Cristovao Borges as their new coach, replacing former Brazil international winger Renato Gaucho.

Gaucho was dismissed Wednesday following the team's elimination from the Rio de Janeiro state championship by rivals Vasco da Gama, reported Xinhua.

Borges, 54, who last year coached Bahia, began his managerial career at Vasco da Gama in 2011.

He is a former player at Fluminense, and helped the club win the Rio championship in 1980.

"We wanted a coach who has history at the club and knows it well," Fluminense coach Peter Siemsen said.

Fluminense, Brazilian champions in 2010 and 2012, have won just one of their past six matches. (IANS)
