Blanket ban is against Indian constitution, says Google
Internet giant, Google ah argued that a blanket ban on and monitoring of material on the Internet is against he principle of freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under the Indian Constitution.
"its mission is to organise the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. Most services offered by it are premised on sharing of information and knowledge without the exercise of any editorial control or of monitoring by it," the company wrote in a reply submitted to Administrative Civil Judge Parveen Singh.
Google is facing a civil lawsuit along with 21 other websites for hosting objectionable content on its website. The civil suit filed by Mufti Aijaz Arshad Qasmi is seeking to restrain the websites from posting objectionable contents and is also urging removal of existing objectionable material from posts.
Google argues that placing a blanket ban on contents from platforms is illegal as the Indian constitution guarantees the right to freedom of speech and expression. Google has also filed relies on the basis of Orkut and Youtube saying that the services are designed to provide platforms allowing users to exchange ideas and access information.
