Veteran industrialist, G P Birla died at the age of 86 years. He breathed his last on late Friday night after suffering from prolonged illness.

The announcement was made by a family member on Saturday, in Kolkata.

GP is succeeded by his wife Nirmala and two children- his son CK Birla and his daughter Lekha Poddar.

The revelations were first made by news provider, IANS, to whom the family member first talked.

As per the details of the programs given by the family, GP's last rites will be held on Saturday at the Keoratala Crematorium.

G P Birla was the head of the GP-CK Birla Group. The group is a conglomerate which has business interests in various verticals including automobiles, infrastructure-related industries, consumer durables, FMCG, engineering and contract- based industries.

The group has its branches and across all the four continents.

GP-CK Birla Group was started by late Braj Mohan Birla, father of G P Birla. The company's flagship brand was Hindustan Motors (HM), which was very active till the foreign automakers came in the country.

HM's units are present in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. It has annual revenue of $1.2 billion.
