Arab League urges Lebanese politicians to de-escalate situation
Cairo - Arab League spokesman Ahmed Bin Hilly on Thursday called upon all Lebanese politicians to calm tensions and de-escalate the political crisis in Beirut.
"We call upon all brothers and politicians in Lebanon to calm the situation and avoid any further escalations, which will certainly not benefit Lebanon," Bin Hilly said.
The statement came a day after supporters of the opposition Shiite movement Hezbollah tightened their grip on the Lebanese government by closing all major roads leading to the capital and isolating neighbourhoods within the capital.
Bin Hilly said Arab League Chief Amr Mussa had been in continuous contact with politicians in Lebanon and other Arab countries in regards to the current tension taking place in the country.
He added that the result of Mussa's talks with others would decide whether or not he would be visiting Lebanon.
Speaking of the possibility of an outbreak of civil war, Bin Hilly said that "there is a Lebanese consensus that the situation would not escalate to exceed the red lines of a civil war."
The spokesman however added that the situation in the country was obviously volatile.
At least one person was killed and four others were wounded in the east of the country as clashes were reported between government and opposition supporters. (dpa)
