Ailing Philippine leader's husband to stay in Japan for more tests
Manila - The ailing husband of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will stay in a Japanese hospital longer to undergo more tests after suffering severe stomach pains during a flight to Peru, a senior official said Saturday.
Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno said the doctors of Jose Miguel Arroyo have arrived in Japan to conduct the tests.
"The First Gentleman will remain in Japan for further analysis from his personal doctors who were sent to Japan to see his condition," Puno said in a statement.
"The First Gentleman will fly back to Manila as soon as his doctors give him clearance to travel," he added
Puno said Mr. Arroyo was in stable condition.
The 62-year-old Jose Miguel Arroyo was among the entourage of his wife who will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' summit in Lima.
The plane carrying President Arroyo and her entourage made an emergency landing in Osaka late Friday after Mr. Arroyo fell ill.
Mr. Arroyo, who has been linked to various corruption scandals in the Philippine government, underwent heart surgery in April 2007.
President Arroyo left Osaka Saturday for the APEC summit, after she was assured that her husband was already in stable condition. She will make a brief stop over in Los Angeles to meet with the Filipino community there. (dpa)
