ACCC asks HP to pay $3 million fine for misleading customers

ACCC asks HP to pay $3 million fine for misleading customersThe Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has imposed a fine of $3 million on Hewlett-Packard Australia for allegedly making false or misleading representations to customers and retailers in the country.

The federal court in the country has found that HP was making false or misleading representations about consumer guarantee rights that includes terms of repairs, product returns and warranties. The ACCC had made moved court against HP in October in the previous year. Justice Robert Buchanan has approved an out of court settlement reached by the two parties and this indicates that the HP will have to pay the fine.

The company has said that it has changed its consumer policies and practices and retrains staff. HP said that the satisfaction of its customers is a focus for business. HP has voluntarily consented to Federal Court orders and agreed to the out of court settlement with the authority.

“We deeply regret that in the instances identified by the ACCC, HP fell short of our core commitment to high standards of service for Australian consumers who purchased our HP-branded desktop computers, notebooks/laptops and printers, and of our duties under Australian consumer laws,” the company said.
