90% of major disasters are a result of dangerous weather, Research shows

According to a latest research, dangerous weather has resulted into a staggering 90% of major disasters. The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reductions reported that the data has disclosed that 6,457 recorded floods, heat waves, droughts, storms and other weather-related disasters have caused a huge damage to different areas worldwide over the last 20 years.

The United States reported 472 natural disasters and was hit the hardest. It was followed by China, India, the Philippines, and Indonesia. According to the researchers estimations the US spends between $250 billion and $300 billion every year over natural disasters. The first Climate Change Conference was held in 1995 and since then, 606,000 people have lost their lives and 4.1 billion people have been injured.

Margareta Wahlström, head of UNISDR, said, “Weather and climate are major drivers of disaster risk and this report demonstrates that the world is paying a high price in lives lost. Economic losses are a major development challenge for many least developed countries battling climate change and poverty”.

Wahlströmadded that a deal in Paris at COP21 on cutting greenhouse gas emissions, in the long term, will be a major contribution in the reduction of damage and loss from disasters which are somewhat driven by rising sea levels and a warming globe.

Since the period of 1995 to 2004, average, weather-related natural disasters have shown a 14%increase, and have got double since 1985 to 1995. At present, Asia suffers the biggest hit from disaster impacts. In the continent, natural disasters have taken 332,000 deaths, and affected 3.7 billion people.
