$500 billion of black money is stored abroad, CBI

$500 billion of black money is stored abroad, CBIA P Singh, the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation has offered to put an estimate on the total amount of black money stored from the country that is stored in foreign locations. He said that about around $500 billion is deposited in foreign accounts from the country.

He was speaking at the maiden Interpol global programme on anti-corruption and asset recovery when he said that the biggest depositors in Swiss banks were from India. The estimate could put the government in an uneasy situation as it has repeatedly claimed that it is not possible to have an estimation of the total amount of black money stored aboard.

The government has set up two committees to address the issue and come up with an estimate of the amount of black money stored by Indian in bank accounts in foreign locations. The finance ministry has said that such calculations are not feasible and thus did not provide data to a Parliament's standing committee.

Opposition parties have been demanding that the government take action against those who have wrongfully deposited money abroad and bring back the wealth to the country.
