2.5 kg tumor removed from young girl

Kasturba hospital in Manipal In an extraordinary achievement, surgeons at the Kasturba hospital in Manipal have successfully removed a large tumour from the liver weighing over 2.5 kg.

A 14 year-old girl was found to have a tumour in the right lobe of her liver. Since treatment was not available at her home town, the young girl had to approach Kasturba Hospital.

The 10-hour surgery was led by Dr Vijay Kumar head, dept of pediatric surgery, Kasturba hospital. According to Kumar, the size of the tumour, found in the right lobe of the liver, was very rare.

Speaking with the media persons, Kumar said: "We performed the 10-hour marathon surgery, removing the entire right half of her liver. Given the size of the tumour, the surgery was really challenging."

Kumar added that it would take about two months for the patient to recover fully.

Kumar and his team were congratulated by hospital's medical superintendent, Dr T S Raghu Raman.
