2 officers killed in Tampa, Manhunt on
It has been reported that about 200 Tampa, Fla., police officers searched on Tuesday for the man suspected of gunning down two officers during an early-morning traffic stop.
The St. Petersburg Times has reported that one slain officer's wife went into labor a few hours after her husband's death. Officer Jeffrey Kocab's first daughter had been expected next week.
The Tampa Bay Tribune has reported that a massive search began immediately after the 2:30 a. m. shooting. Cortnee Nicole Brantley, 22, the driver of the car that was pulled over, was picked up within hours but Dontae Rashawn Morris, 24, the alleged shooter, remained a fugitive.
Officer David Curtis, 31, pulled over Brantley's car about 2:15 a. m. because the license plate could not be seen, investigators have said. They discovered Morris was wanted on an arrest warrant from Jacksonville.
Police further reported that Kocab, 31, responded when Curtis called for backup. Morris allegedly shot the officers in the head and fled on foot while the driver also took off in the car, allegedly picking up Morris nearby.
Brantley had not been charged with any crime Tuesday afternoon.
Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said, "Our interview with her is critical for us to be able to get to the shooter."
Police also informed that both officers died at Tampa General Hospital. Curtis's family kept him on life support for several hours so his organs could be donated.
The department further said that Curtis is survived by his wife and their four young children. (With Inputs from Agencies)
