10 persons injured at Memorial Day celebration by Helicopter
Authorities have revealed that a Marine helicopter taking part in Memorial Day weekend celebrations in New York Sunday blew tree branches into a crowd, injuring at least 10.
The New York Daily News has reported that while landing on Staten Island, downdraft from the Osprey hybrid helicopter's rotors broke up two trees and sent almost 30 branches flying into spectators.
Yolanda Maiurrno, 80, struck in the ankle by a branch, said, "It was a really scary and horrific scene. I'm all shook up right now and I can't stop shaking."
She said, "I came here to have a lovely day. It was between this and the beach, and now I wish I chose the beach."
The MV-22 Bravo Osprey helicopter/airplane hybrid was attempting to land in the middle of a ball field at Cloves Lakes Park Preserve.
Marine Capt. Michael Henson, whose regiment is based in North Carolina, said, "We came in over the trees. You can't see what's going on underneath them."
Authorities have said that a local hospital treated seven people for minor injuries, while three were treated at the scene.
They further said that test runs during the week with the helicopter had gone off without incident. (With Inputs from Agencies)
